Andy Cole has questioned the workrate of Arsenal duo Willian and Nicolas Pepe on talkSPORT and shared that the youngsters will be ‘bitterly disappointed’ with their lack of effort.
Arsenal have been in quite the mess recently, and to try and get them out of their current hole, it’s not the senior players who have stepped up but the youngsters.
Two players, in particular, have shone bright – Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka – the teenage stars showcasing no fear on the ball and a lot of effort without it.
Former Manchester United striker Cole thinks that the likes of Willian and Pepe can do more when out on that pitch.
“I think that’s what Arsenal need, period [players working hard],” said Cole. “Pepe and Willan. When you see these guys not working their socks off, you have to be bitterly disappointed.
“These guys [the youngsters] are looking to these guys to say ‘right you can change the game for us, so you have to give us a little bit more’.
“And when they’re not giving you enough your turnaround and say ‘Of course we are going to struggle because you are supposed to be our main players here’.”
Arsenal’s record transfer deals
Both Willian and Pepe have struggled this season and the wingers have failed to showcase why Arsenal brought them to the club.
From Willian’s perspective, he was signed on a free-transfer after leaving Chelsea, but he hasn’t turned up since the opening day.
Whilst Pepe isn’t really showing why the Gunners paid such big-money for his talents last summer. Either way, these are testing time for both players.
