The fourth season of Haikyuu To The Top has concluded, but will the anime return to the court for season 5 and when could it release?

Haikyuu!! (commonly abbreviated to Haikyu) is arguably the most popular sports anime in the entire world.

The first three seasons of Haikyuu!! released in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively. However, season 4 was a split-cour production, with the first set of episodes being released in early-2020 and the second cour coming to an end next week.

So, with the season 4 finale premiering today for free users on Crunchyroll, fans are desperate to know if the anime will to return to the court and what date season 5 could release?

Haikyuu!! season 5: Renewal status

  • At the time of writing, Haikyuu has not been renewed for a fifth season by Production I.G, but the anime is likely to return in the future.

There has been some confusion around season 5, which started when season 4 was split into two cours. When the second cour premiered, many fans and news outlets incorrectly assumed, and reported, that this was the fifth season.

However, the anime has yet to be officially renewed by either the animation studio or associated TV networks.

Thankfully, there is easily enough source material for at least one more season. The manga will officially conclude in chapter 402 and with season 4 only starting with chapter 207, there is plenty of content left to adapt – probably for a sixth season too.

Interestingly, the official English Haikyu!! Twitter page posted a message last week thanking fans for their support on the series. However, the tweet ended with “Looking forward to the continuation!”

Haikyuu!! season 5: Release date

As Haikyuu has not been officially renewed for a fifth season, a release date has not been revealed. However, we can make some predictions based on the production schedule of previous seasons.

Season 4 was announced at Jump Festa ’19 and premiered in January 2020, a roughly one-year production cycle.

Assuming that the anime will be renewed within the next few months and there will not be another three-year break, Haikyuu season 5 could theoretically premiere as soon as autumn 2021.

However, a more realistic expectation would be that the fifth season of the anime will release in Winter 2021, with another two-cour split schedule, i.e. January 2021 and October 2022.

Viewers on US and UK Netflix may have to wait a little bit longer to see the fifth season, with seasons 3 and 4 still to be released on the platform. Viewers on Netflix shouldn’t expect to see season 5 until late-2021 or even early-2022.
