The shortest day of the year falls today in the northern hemisphere. Here are the best Winter Solstice memes to mark the occasion.

The 21st of December has been a talking point on social media in the days and weeks leading up to it for many reasons. Some think the world is going to end, others in anticipation for Winter Solstice, while other have been joking about getting superpowers.

What is Winter Solstice?

Winter Solstice comes around twice a year, once for the Northern Hemisphere and once for the Southern Hemisphere. The December 21st solstice is for the Northern Hemisphere and marks the longest night and shortest day of the year.

Winter Solstice is the one day of the year that the Earth’s pole is at a maximum tilt away from the sun.

This means today the sun travels the shortest path through the sky, meaning it has the least amount of daylight of the whole year.
