He might be a former Tottenham Hotspur player, but Christian Eriksen would be a quite wonderful signing for Arsenal – or at least, he would’ve been.
The Denmark international has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks.
But if rumours are believed, Eriksen, who quit Tottenham last January, isn’t wanted by Arsenal all that much.
According to Calciomercato this week, the Gunners have rejected the chance to sign the Inter Milan playmaker in January.
The Italian side are even willing to loan him out but Arsenal are having none of it – and it’s a terrible decision.
Rejecting Eriksen is fine if you don’t need him but, well, the North Londoners do need him.
Eleven goals in 13 Premier League games this season illustrates perfectly well that Mikel Arteta’s side aren’t scoring enough, which is because they aren’t creating enough, which is because they don’t have a number 10.
The club’s technical director Edu claimed this week that signing a creative midfielder was top priority for Arsenal this winter, so to turn down somebody who has 62 Premier League assists in 226 games for Spurs is a little bit rich.
Beggars can’t be choosers and Edu just isn’t going to be able to recruit the sort of names that Arsenal are being linked to, because if you were Houssem Aouar, would you join a club who sit 15th in the Premier League table?
Some fans might argue that Edu is right and that the Emirates Stadium outfit should look to sign players on the rise, but Eriksen is only 28 and remains in the prime of his career, even if he isn’t playing like it in Italy.
Even on loan, this would’ve been a wonderful signing for a team who badly need the sort of experience and skills that Eriksen possesses, but Edu and Arteta clearly have other ideas.
