According to A Bola, Benfica and Tottenham have agreed to terminate Gedson Fernandes’ loan agreement, and he will leave north London in January.
The Portuguese news outlet states that the Portugal Under-21 international will link up with Jorge Jesus’ squad next month.
A decision had been agreed between Spurs and the Portuguese giants in the past few days, which will see the midfielder’s time in England end prematurely.
The 21-year-old joined Jose Mourinho’s squad on an 18-month loan deal back in January, where Spurs held an option to make the deal permanent upon its expiration.
However, the midfielder has only made 13 appearances for Tottenham.

In fairness to Mourinho, his midfield is very bloated.
Last season, he had to find space for Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp, Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli, in addition to Fernandes.
This term, the arrival of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has only pushed the on-loan Portuguese midfielder further down the pecking order.

It will be a shame to see Fernandes depart, as he arguably hasn’t been given enough of a chance to show what he can do.
However, he is still young, and it will be good for him to return to familiar surroundings where he can continue his footballing development.
