Safety arrived on Disney Plus on December 11th but is the football film based on a true story? If so, what happened to Ray McElrathbey?

As well as its usual array of animated princess films and live-action remake, Disney has always brought fans inspirational tales from the real world.

The newest release to the Disney+ streaming service is the film Safety.

It tells the story of a college football player who must juggle his school and sporting life with caring for his 11-year-old brother who lives with him on campus.

Safety on Disney+

Safety arrives on Disney+ on Friday, December 11th.

The film tells the story of Ray McElrathbey, a college football player.

However, while Ray attempts to juggle his sporting ambitions and his schoolwork, he’s forced to take care of his 11-year-old brother who lives with him on campus as their mother struggles with drug addiction.

Is Safety a true story?

  • Yes, Safety really is based on a true story.

Set during the 2006/07 college football season, the film tells the true story of 19-year-old Ray Ray McElrathbey and his 11-year-old brother, Fahmarr.

Ray attended Clemson University in South Carolina and was a running back for the Clemson Tigers college team according to ESPN.

Where is Ray McElrathbey now?

Ray McElrathbey never made the step up to the NFL as a season-ending ACL injury in 2007 meant that Clemson did not renew his scholarship in 2008 but he was offered an assistant coaching position.

Despite that, Ray Ray went on to earn his undergraduate degree in 2008 and he then went on to Howard University’s graduate school, playing for Howard Bison for one year.

McElrathbey has maintained a passion for football in the years since his time at Clemson and served as a consultant on the film itself.

Today, Ray McElrathbey is often on the move between Atlanta, Los Angeles and Clemson according to Sporting News and has close-knit connections with Clemson’s college football program to this day.

Safety is available to stream on Disney+ from Friday, December 11th, 2020.
