PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir were playing out their final match in the Champions League group stage last night, December 8th.
However, a touchline incident featuring the match’s fourth official marred the affair and left the match abandoned after both sets of players left the pitch in protest.
But just who is the fourth official in question, Sebastian Coltescu?
PSG v Istanbul Basaksehir abandoned after touchline incident
The Champions League Group H fixture between PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir was abandoned on Tuesday, December 8th after a touchline incident caused both teams to leave the field in protest.
It is alleged that Romanian fourth official, Sebastian Coltescu had used a racist term towards one of Istanbul’s backroom staff, Pierre Webo.
For the touchline exchange, Pierre Webo was shown a red card by match referee Ovidiu Hategan.
In protest of the incident, Istanbul Basaksehir’s players left the field and were followed by PSG’s squad, leaving the match unfinished.
Who is Sebastian Coltescu?
Constantin Sebastian Coltescu is a 43-year-old Romanian referee and works as an engineer outside of football according to Transfer Markt.
Born on May 6th, 1977, Sebastian Coltescu has been working as a referee since 1996 and earned his place in Romania’s top league in 2003
By 2006, he had earned a place on FIFA’s list of affiliated referees.
According to the World Referee database, however, Sebastian Coltescu was removed from the FIFA list in 2007 and was also demoted to Romania’s second division, although it’s not stated why.
The same source states that Coltescu won his place back in Romania’s top division in 2008.
During the 2020/21 season, Coltescu has officiated several games in his native Romania and has served as the fourth official in three Champions League fixtures prior to the PSG-Instanbul game including Dynamo Kyiv v Juventus, Atalanta v Liverpool and Shakhtar Donetsk v Real Madrid.
The PSG-Instanbul game has been rescheduled
It has been announced that the PSG-Istanbul Basaksehir match has been rescheduled and will resume at 17:55 GMT on Wednesday, December 9th.
The match will resume from the 14th minute, the point at which it was abandoned on Tuesday, with the score remaining 0-0.
Following the touchline incident, the match will be completed with a new group of match officials with Dutchman Danny Makkelie taking charge as referee.
Fellow Dutchman Mario Diks and Marcin Boniek of Poland will act as assistant referees while Bartosch Frankowsky, also of Poland, will take on the duties of fourth official.
