Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has given an interesting update on Liverpool’s hunt for a centre-back in the January transfer window.
The reds are certainly in need of a new defender after Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk went down with serious injuries.
However, despite Castles claiming that Jurgen Klopp would like a new defender in the winter window, it seems as though the Reds may hold back when targeting a centre-back in January.
“My information is that they’re waiting to see what happens for this last month before the January window opens before committing to that strategy that Jurgen Klopp would like of bringing in a quality centre-back to compensate for the loss of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, or whether to brazen it out to the end of the season,” Castles said.
“What might be important here, obviously results are important, but what might be very important is the game against Tottenham next midweek.”

We can understand the higher-ups at Anfield not being keen to splash the cash on a centre-back, especially when you consider how good Joel Matip and Fabinho have been as of late.
Fans have raved about the new centre-back pairing this week, and the reality is that Gomez and van Dijk won’t be out of action forever.
Liverpool could end up signing a defender in January only for him to be surplus to requirements by the time the summer rolls around.
Castles named Dayot Upamecano as a potential target in the January, but with the French centre-half having a release clause that becomes active in the summer, the Reds may be best off waiting to conclude that deal.
As Castles says, that Tottenham game will be the true litmus test for this new Liverpool backline, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens when the Merseysiders square off against Jose Mourinho’s side.
