Selena: The Series on Netflix
Selena: The Series makes its long-awaited debut on Netflix on December 4th, 2020.
The series, which stars Christian Serratos as the titular singer, details the life and struggles of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla.
From her childhood and rise to fame and eventually to her tragic death, Selena: The Series promises to be essential viewing.
What happened to Ricky Vela?
Ricky Vela joined Selena y Los Dinos as a keyboard artist in 1985 and was present throughout the band’s success.
As referenced in Selena: The Series, Ricky Vela genuinely did have feelings for Selena’s older sister, Suzette.
Ricky then wrote the song No Me Queda Más, about his unrequited love, in 1994 after Suzette’s marriage to Billy Arriaga in September 1993.
Selena and Suzette’s father, Abraham Quintanilla spoke to Billboard in 1994 and said: “Ricky is a very shy person, an introvert. “And he liked my other daughter, Suzette, the drummer.
“And I know Ricky liked her because he would tell me, and I would kid around with Ricky and say, ‘Hey, Ricky, you like her? Talk to her!’ and he wouldn’t do it.”
After the tragic death of Selena in 1995, Los Dinos disbanded and Ricky Vela’s career in the music industry seemingly came to an end as there’s no record of him working with another band or going solo.
Although, in 2020, Ricky Vela was credited as a composer on Ángela Aguilar’s rendition of his song No Me Queda Más.
In November 2017, Ricky Vela was seen pictured (right) as Madame Tussauds in Hollywood unveiled a wax figure of Selena.
