Attack on Titan season 4 episode 1 was incredible, but some fans may need the premiere to be explained, including the war, time-skip and new characters.

If you needed proof that Attack on Titan was one of the biggest TV series in the entire world, all you needed to do was to look on Twitter last night.

Not only was the series and new characters trending worldwide, but Crunchyroll crashed for 5 minutes following the premiere due to the demand to watch the anime.

Attack on Titan season 4 episode 1 was brilliant, but there are a few things that may need to be explained to the casual fans, including the war, time-skip and new characters.

The war…

The first thing in season 4’s premiere that may have confused fans was the WW1-esc war between the Marleyan and Mid-East Allied Forces.

The Marleyan’s are the people we meet at the end of season 3 with Eren experiencing his father’s memories and is the place where Reiner, Bertoldt, Annie and Zeke are originally from.

However, very little is known about their enemies, the Mid-East Allied Forces. What we do know is that they are another surviving population of humanity and have been locked in a war with the Marleyan’s for the past several years.

The battle we see in episode 1 is the last engagement between the two armies over Fort Slava and the Mid-Easts’ naval port. The victory for the Marleyan’s here brought about the surrender of the Allied Forces and an end to their 4-year war.

Time-skip…

The information that these two groups have been engaged in a bloody war for the past 4 years confirmed something that many fans had been expecting…that there has been a time-skip in the story.

The Marleyan soldiers reveal that the war began with the loss of the Colossal Titan, which means that there has been at least four years between the season 3 finale and season 4 premiere.

Many fans had suspected that there would be a time-skip after the Scouts appeared older in the reveal trailers, as well as being noticeably taller.

All of our favourite characters may be older, but we are yet to fully see how much they have changed. The only characters that we see have markedly aged is Reiner, who looks more dishevelled and now sports a goatee and Jean.

New characters…

We are also introduced to some new characters: The Warrior Candidates, a group of young Eldians (the same race as Eren and the Scouts) who can inherit Titan powers.

The main new characters that we meet in episode 1 are:

  • Colt Grice: The blonde man who is in-line to be the next armoured titan.
  • Falco Grice: Colt’s younger brother and also a candidate for the next generation of titans.
  • Gabi Braun: A fiery young warrior girl who is also a candidate for the titan powers.
  • Porco Gilliard: This was the blond-haired armoured-faced Titan we saw in the battle.

There are also a few more lesser-characters introduced; Udo and Zofia who are both also young Eldian Warrior Candidates and their commander.
