Tottenham Hotspur consultant David Pleat was urging Daniel Levy to to sign Ivan Toney this summer, Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed on the Hard Truth podcast.
Posh sold Toney to Brentford in the previous transfer window, but Spurs did have a tentative interest in the forward.
Indeed, Pleat was trying to persuade Levy that Toney would be a good addition to Tottenham’s team.
However, his pitches fell on deaf ears, with Spurs ultimately opting to sign Carlos Vinicius instead.
“David Pleat from Spurs wanted Daniel Levy to sign Ivan Toney,” MacAnthony said.
“David Pleat is a friend of mine and Barry Fry’s and he honestly wanted Levy to sign Ivan Toney.
“Obviously they were looking at Harry Kane with injuries, they were looking at their lack of strikers, and they wanted back-up.
“David Pleat saw Ivan Toney as a no-brainer. He thought the cost was low, his wages would be low, he would be an easy addition to the Tottenham squad, he was a good age and if it didn’t come off for Tottenham they would probably sell him double the money to a Championship team.”

Toney’s start at Brentford suggests that he may well have made a useful addition to Tottenham’s team.
The 24-year-old has netted 13 goals in 15 league appearances for Brentford, and is one of the few forwards in English football who can claim to have outscored Son this season.
If Spurs are to sign Toney now it is likely that they would face paying a huge fee for him, given his wonderful form since moving to Brentford.
Tottenham will still feel satisfied with the business they did in the previous window though, as Vinicius has looked bright on his few appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side so far.
