Struggling Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen has missed out on his Premier League chance with Newcastle United unlikely to renew their interest any time soon, Dutch pundit Johan Derksen told Voetbal Zone.

It is almost three years since the Magpies made a bid for a giant Denmark international who, back in 2018, was perhaps the most lethal centre-forward in the Eredivisie.

Jorgensen plundered 25 goals in a stunning debut season at De Kuip, inspiring Feyenoord to their first league title of the 21st century while forming a formidable partnership with the veteran Dirk Kuyt.

According to the Northern Echo, his penalty-box presence and lethal finishing caught the eye of Newcastle.

The Tyneside giants offered around £13 million but Feyenoord dismissed the bid out of hand, demanding £23 million for their 6ft 4ins talisman.

Flash forward to the present day, however, and the Rotterdam giants would snap your hand off for £13 million now, with Derksen believing that Newcastle will not be renewing their interest any time soon.

“(A big-money move to Newcastle) has evaporated. You should be happy now if a club comes to take over his salary,” Derksen, a former defender, explained. “Then you should be happy, then he will be off the payroll.

“(A transfer to the Premier League) will never happen again, it is best to distance yourself from that. Gradually, it is becoming a bit of a laughing stock. They don’t take (Jorgensen) seriously anymore.”

A relentless series of injuries have wrecked Jorgensen’s Eredivisie career, with the 29-year-old restricted to just 15 starts, and six goals, since the start of 2019/20.

Another ineffective performance in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Utrecht felt like a fitting reflection of how far Jorgensen’s stock has fallen.
