Why was The Expanse cancelled? Let’s get the renewal status of the Amazon sci-fi series explained. Will there be a season 6?
TV fans have had no shortage of content this year despite the industry being plagued by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many shows had to shut down production in accordance with the lockdown and this led many audiences to contemplate when (and if) their favourite shows would return.
A number of titles have already been cancelled in 2020, with the likes of Altered Carbon, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, GLOW, October Faction and many more having been given the axe.
One of the latest TV series to have its end pushed into sight is The Expanse.
Based on the New York Times bestselling book series of the same name and developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, it premiered on SyFy back in 2018.
However, they pulled the plug on it and fans responded with a campaign to bring it back for a fourth season. Fortunately, Amazon did just that.
Nevertheless, it has now been confirmed that it will be coming to an end…
Why was The Expanse cancelled?
- It’s uncertain why The Expanse was cancelled. However, fans will still be given the opportunity to see the story reach a conclusion. It has been given the greenlight for a sixth and final season.
Season 5 begins premiering on Amazon from Wednesday, December 16th 2020, so audiences still have two seasons to tuck into before The Expanse disappears from screens.
Although he didn’t provide a reason for the show coming to an end with season 6, the co-head of television for Amazon Studios – Vernon Sanders – addressed the decision:
“We’d like to thank Naren, Andrew, Broderick, everyone at Alcon and the entire cast and crew of The Expanse for the hard work and love they have put into the series over these past seasons. We’re very happy we can give the incredibly loyal and passionate fans of The Expanse the satisfying conclusion to the series that they deserve. We know they’ll love how Seasons Five and Six unfold.”
Despite season 6 being confirmed as the last, it’s still fortunate that the writers will be able to wrap the story up.
It’s uncertain how long the series was actually intended to go on for though. If the writers did have potential ideas mapped out for multiple more seasons, perhaps there will be a great deal of narrative to cram into just one?
Considering there are eight books with a ninth scheduled for release in 2021, that seems likely.
Fans react to the news
Inevitably, a number of fans have flocked to Twitter to weigh in their thoughts on the renewal news.
Some are clearly less than impressed with the prospect of no more The Expanse down the line.
