The Golden Joystick Awards 2020 have now crowned their winners in each category, including the coveted Game of the Year (GOTY) award for the best title of 2020.

While perhaps not quite as influential as Geoff Keighley’s award ceremony, The Game Awards, The Golden Joysticks nonetheless hold a lot of sway in the games industry, and celebrate fan choices for the cream of the crop in any given year.

This being the case, who are the big winners at the Golden Joysticks? Who walked away with the Game of the Year award?

What won Game of the Year at the 2020 Golden Joystick Awards?

The Ultimate Game of the Year award for the 2020 Golden Joystick Awards was awarded to The Last of Us 2.

This is an unsurprising winner – at the time of its release, The Last of Us 2 won a lot of acclaim for its nuanced, bittersweet story of pain and revenge in an unfair world. While the game wasn’t to everyone’s taste, it certainly fits with the kind of game that the Golden Joystick voters like to reward.

The Last of Us 2 was helped to victory by the fact that 2020’s most anticipated release, Cyberpunk 2077, was delayed until December, making it inelligible for this year’s awards – it remains to be seen whether its impact will be great enough to afford it an award in 2021 instead.
