The BBC has hinted that more Gavin and Stacey could be on the way but does this mean fans will be getting a release date for season 4 of the BBC comedy?
Gavin and Stacey’s 2019 Christmas Special was one of the most-watched TV programmes in recent memory.
With a total audience of around 18.49 million according to BARB, the festive episode was the most-watched non-sporting event in a decade and also boasted the biggest comedy audience for 17 years.
As a result, and thanks to the special episode’s cliffhanger ending, fans have long since wondered if Gavin and Stacey might return for a new series.
Now, in November 2020, fans might have just been given their answer about Gavin and Stacey season 4.
BBC hints at more Gavin and Stacey
In the run-up to 2020’s festive TV schedule, the BBC’s Chief Content Officer, Charlottle Moore, hinted that more Gavin and Stacey could well be on its way.
Speaking to BBC News about the potential of a Christmas Special in 2020, Charlotte Moore said: “That wasn’t something that was going to happen this year,” she said, before adding “One day.”
Season 4 renewal status and release date
- Gavin and Stacey has not officially been renewed for season 4 at the time of writing.
However, the comments from the BBC’s Charlotte Moore do hint that more episodes, whether that’s a new series or more festive specials, could be on their way.
Speaking to The Sun following the broadcast of 2019’s much-loved special, Gavin and Stacey co-creator, Ruth Jones said that it was “complicated” to get together to write with James Corden owing to his talk show commitments in the US.
Jones explained: “I do say never say never, as while we did make it work that was after three years of trying to find time when we could sit down and write it,” before hinting, “obviously with the way it ends, there is room for more.”
As Gavin and Stacey has not been officially renewed for season 4, there is no word on a potential release date at the time of writing.
Gavin and Stacey season 4 plot
It’s safe to say that the 2019 Christmas Special left the door wide open for more Gavin and Stacey episodes.
The biggest talking point after the episode was Nessa proposing to Smithy after admitting that she had feelings for him.
Not only that but Gavin and Stacey are parents now while Nessa and Smithy’s son, Neil the Baby, will shortly be turning 12.
All of that, plus the antics of Pam, Mick, Bryn, Gwen as well as the on-again-off-again Pete and Dawn would make for a delightful return to our screens.
If you can’t wait for more Gavin and Stacey to arrive, all three series plus 2019’s Christmas Special are currently available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
