Rumours of Rihanna in Black Panther 2 recently emerged, so let’s consider why a part in the sequel would be her most significant screen appearance yet.
The MCU kicked off way back in 2008 with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man and has been immersing audiences in its grand spectacle ever since.
Ten years after that, they had one of their biggest successes yet with Avengers: Infinity War, the film which shocked the world and left jaws on the floor.
A couple of months prior, however, audiences were treated to Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, which was nominated for six Academy Awards and won three of them; Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design.
The film was swiftly championed as a cultural phenomenon and Chadwick Boseman was hailed as an icon in the titular role. Tragically, the actor passed away from cancer at the age of 43 in August 2020.
Nevertheless, the Black Panther sequel will still go ahead – Wakanda forever, after all.
Inevitably, fans continue to speculate regarding the film’s cast and recent rumours that Rihanna will star have sent Twitter into somewhat of a frenzy…
Fans react to Black panther 2 Rihanna rumours
Essentially, the rumours stem from fans searching for the Black Panther 2 cast and seeing Rihanna featured on Google amongst familiar names.
However, there is no evidence to suggest that the 32-year-old Barbadian multi-talent has been cast. Although, that hasn’t prevented fans from reacting to rumours on Twitter.

Opinion: Why Black Panther 2 would be Rihanna’s most significant role yet
Rihanna is no stranger to moviegoers and has starred in a number of notable films, including Ocean’s Eight (she played Nine Ball), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Bubble), Annie (Moon Goddess) and Battleship (Petty Officer Cora ‘Weps’ Raikes).
She even played herself in 2013’s This is the End with Seth Rogen and James Franco, while she most recently starred Guava Island with Donald Glover, of Childish Gambino fame.
While there are some star-studded projects listed on her acting resume, Black panther 2 would arguably be the most noteworthy blockbuster of the bunch and, taking the predecessor’s billion-dollar-plus box office into account, would see Rihanna earn her biggest moviegoing audience yet.
Understandably, she’s foremostly considered a popstar. However, a role in an MCU effort could cement her as a moviestar in the eyes of those who have dismissed her previous screen work as mere cameos.
This brings us to her potential role…
Who could she play?
Well, a We Got This Covered piece from 2019 addressed that sources close to the MCU project suggested Rihanna was being considered for the part of Princess Zanda.
The character is “the ruler of the African nation of Narobia” and was something of a villain in the comic books. If this were to be the case, Rihanna would be given the opportunity to defy audience expectations in a more sinister part and elaborate on her established acting skillset.
Also, considering many fans regard the popstar as something of a princess in her own right, it’s likely that the role could be regarded as her most iconic and, who knows, could potentially lead to a spin-off depending on fan popularity.
The sequel reportedly begins filming in the summer of 2021, so perhaps there is still time for her to be cast.
