Sherry Prose fired over Kamala Harris post

Sherry Prose has been terminated immediately from her role at the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office over a Facebook post she made about Kamala Harris, WXYZ first broke the news on Monday, November 16th.

The now-viral post shows Halloween jack-o-lantern carvings depicting Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Mike Pence and Kamala Harris. The picture intends to depict Trump, Biden and Pence as pumpkin carvings, while Kamala is shown as a carved watermelon lantern.

“Trump, Biden, Pence and Kamala. Happy Halloween,” Sherry wrote in the post.

As it gained popularity, some Twitter users found the post offensive due to the way watermelons often get used as a racist trope in association with the African American community.

Speaking to WXYZ, Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony, who is the Detroit Branch NAACP President, told the publication:

“It grows out of [the] past and a recognition that often is linked to buffoonery and to less than. Yes, I believe that the intent was purposely structured to diminish and to dilute the significance of the first African American…. as vice president of these United States. To some people ignorance is bliss.”

One user tweeted in response: “There are at least 71,000,000 more Sherry Prose out there! They are racist and bigotry, and they don’t even realize it. Or maybe they do.”

Another one said: “So an Oakland County Sheriff Sherry Prose in MI was fired over social media post depicting Kamala Harris as watermelon. For me relating African Americans to watermelon is a mockery of who we are.”
