Speaking to Sky Sports (Via Goal) Paul Merson has claimed that Willian is looking lost at Arsenal at the moment and that they have to get him performing sooner rather than later.
The Gunners haven’t been in the best form as of late, sitting 11th in the league after eight games, and it’s fair to say their summer signing hasn’t been brilliant since arriving at the Emirates.
Willian got off to a flier at Arsenal, grabbing a hat-trick of assists against Fulham on the opening day of the season, but since then, he’s not contributed to a single goal.
“I think I’m seeing things at the moment,” Merson said.
“Willian was unbelievable at Chelsea last year. For me, he was probably one of the best Chelsea players. He was phenomenal – an outstanding talent.
“He has gone to Arsenal and he looks lost. They have got to get him performing.”
The former Arsenal midfielder is right, the Gunners need to get more out of Willian.
The winger isn’t performing and one of their top priorities has to be working with him to get the best out of him.
To make matters worse, he’s keeping a £72 million player out of the starting XI.
Now, that isn’t to say that Nicolas Pepe would be any better than Willian, after all, he’s been the subject of criticism lately, but the fact that Willian is still getting consistent starts must be frustrating for the likes of Pepe and Reiss Nelson.
It’s not as if Willian is a bad player, there’s a reason why Merson called him an outstanding talent, but right now Arteta is having real problems in getting anything from his wide players, and he needs to figure out some sort of solution.
Whether or not the Brazilian will have an upturn in form remains to be seen, but if Arsenal are going to start climbing the league table, they need to get more from their summer signing.
