Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports, during their live coverage of England’s 2-0 defeat to Belgium, that Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish was a ‘standout performer’ for his country last night.
The Liverpool legend was on commentary for the game and he spoke in awe of the boyhood Villa fan and admitted that there is always that initial ‘worry’ that a player making that step up is unable to play with such ‘confidence’.
Even though England suffered a defeat in the UEFA Nations League, it was a night to remember for the Villa academy product, who wowed the fans, especially in the second half.
That was pointed out by Carragher, who clearly enjoyed the performance he put in on the night and thinks ‘everything’ was going through him.
“But again in this second half everything going through Jack Grealish,” said Carragher. “You always worry at times when a player steps up onto the international level. It’s not so much will they bring that club form? It’s will they bring that confidence and that football arrogance?
“I am just watching him in this second half and it’s like he is playing for Villa. He wants everything to go through him. And he wants to continue to get on the ball.
“Jack Grealish fantastic again in an around that box. He has been a standout performer in the second half and certainly throughout this game for England. I am really pleased with how he has done.”
Whilst those at Aston Villa knew Grealish could make the step up, it seems this match was the coming of age for Grealish and proof as to why Gareth Southgate should put more faith in him.
Only last month, he wasn’t even coming off the bench for five minutes during England’s competitive clashes against Denmark and Belgium.
But fast forward to today and he has wowed the English supporters and seemingly won over Southgate, who was previously been very hesitant to give him a key role in the starting XI.
