Who is Janet Hubert?

Janet Hubert is an American actress best known for playing the character of Vivian Banks or ‘Aunt Viv’ on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air from its first season in 1990 until the end of the third season in 1993.

The 64-year-old from Chicago was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for the role in her show in 1991.

However, her time on the show was cut short after she was fired, and she has had a lifelong feud with Will Smith ever since. But what actually happened?

Janet Hubert and Will Smith’s feud explained

After appearing in three seasons of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Janet Hubert was sacked, but her character remained in the show and was played by Daphne Maxwell Reid for the final three seasons.

It was widely regarded and one of the worst re-casts of all time, and no one could understand why Janet was sacked in the first place.

At the time, the reason given was that she was ‘difficult to work with’, and ever since then, Janet has publicly slammed the show and Will Smith.

In an interview with an Atlanta radio station in 1993, Will Smith said:

“I can say straight up that Janet Hubert wanted the show to be The Aunt Viv of Bel Air Show because I know she is going to dog me in the press. She has basically gone from a quarter of a million dollars a year to nothing. She’s mad now but she’s been mad all along. She said once, ‘I’ve been in the business for 10 years and this snotty-nosed punk comes along and gets a show.’ No matter what, to her I’m just the Antichrist.”

Janet Hubert has never let it go, and for the past 20 years she has mentioned on multiple occasions how demonised she felt by the show. She even refused to ever appear in a Fresh Prince reunion, and told TMZ:

“There will never be a reunion…as I will never do anything with an a—hole like Will Smith. He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.”

There have been many more occasions where Janet has spoken badly of Will Smith, and the feud all comes back to Janet being sacked from the show. However, no one will ever truly know the reason why she was fired.
