Injury-hit Liverpool could offer free agent Daryl Janmaat a return to the Premier League after Gini Wijnaldum recommended his Dutch international teammate to the English champions, according to TEAMtalk.

Four years since Steven Caulker made a very unexpected switch from QPR to Anfield, the Reds could be tempted to turn to another short-term option to solve their defensive dilemmas.

When the Premier League returns after the international break, the defence which lead Liverpool to their first top-flight crown in 30 years could be all-but unrecognisable, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez joining the totemic Virgil van Dijk on the sidelines.

Ironically enough, Gomez was an option to replace Alexander-Arnold at right-back before he suffered a potentially season-ending injury on Wednesday.

One man’s misery may be another’s fortune, however, with TEAMtalk reporting that 31-year-old Janmaat could be offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the Premier League winners.

Wijnaldum, who has shared a dressing room with Janmaat for both Holland and Newcastle, is a big fan and would give a surprise move his backing.

The 34-capped international would be an astute, if short-term addition. He has almost 150 PL appearances under his belt and, after leaving Watford in October, would arrive without the requirement of a transfer fee.

He would also give Jurgen Klopp an experienced alternative to youngster Neco Williams at right-back.

Interestingly, Brendan Rodgers wanted to sign Janmaat in 2015 when the defender was impressing at Newcastle.
