The first season of The God of High School was a global hit, but will the Crunchyroll original anime return for season 2 and if so, when?

Between In/Spectre, Tower of God and The God of High School, it’s been an incredible summer for Crunchyroll original anime.

The latter series, The God of High School, was one of the most-anticipated and despite some questionable pacing, became one of the most popular series of the year.

Now, the first round of The God of High School is officially over, here is everything that we know so far about season 2 of the hard-hitting anime.

Will there be a season 2 of The God of High School?

  • At the time of writing, The God of High School has not been renewed for a second season, but the hit anime is highly likely to return at some point.

Whilst there has not yet been an official announcement regarding the future of The God of High School, the series is highly likely to return for at least one more season.

Anime renewals tend to be dependent on two factors; popularity and source material.

The God of High School is currently scoring a 4.2/5 on Crunchyroll, 7.19/10 on MyAnimeList and a 7.6/10 on IMDB – so the anime is definitely popular enough with fans to merit a second season.

There is also plenty of source material from the original Webtoon series that can be adapted for many more seasons. Monsters & Critics broke down their predictions for how much material could be adapted and estimate that with the 480+ chapters of the Webtoon currently published, we could actually get up to six seasons of the anime.

Hopefully, an official announcement concerning season 2 of The God of High School by the end of 2020, so keep checking back in for updates.

The God of High School season 2 release date…

As The God of High School has yet to be renewed for a second season, an official release date remains unknown.

The issue with predicting potential release dates for unconfirmed seasons of anime comes down to three factors; when production starts, the adaptable source material and how long it takes to animate episodes.

On one hand, there is plenty of source material to adapt for a second season and production can start as soon as MAPPA are given the green light.

However, those long and highly-choreographed fight sequences that we all love in The God of High School are likely to take a long amount of time to animate. This means that individual episodes may need longer to produce compared to a typical anime of similar length.

We also have to consider that MAPPA also have their hands full with other projects, including Attack on Titan season 4, Jujutsu Kaisen, Yasuke and Yuri on Ice.

Whilst an optimistic prediction for the season 2 premiere would be late-2021, a more realistic expectation is that The God of High School will return in 2022.

Again, we will update this article as soon as more information is officially revealed, so keep checking in.
