Gabriel Agbonlahor has backed Ollie Watkins to break his Aston Villa Premier League goalscoring record in an interview with CBS Sports.

The former Villans striker seems to be very excited by the current crop of players coming through at Villa Park, and he thinks that Watkins has what it takes to break his record.

Agbonlahor is currently Aston Villa’s top Premier League goalscorer with 74 goals, and after Watkins hit six goals in seven games, the retired striker thinks that the 24-year-old will continue to bang them in for years to come.

The 34-year-old gave the former Brentford man a rave review.

“He gives defences worries as they can’t push in because he can play in behind.

“It’s just good to see him doing well, and I feel like the way he’s playing and the way he’s scoring goals, I do actually feel that he’ll break my record, and I’m happy for him, because my record was I think 74 goals.

“I feel like Aston Villa will be a Premier League team for a while now and if he keeps playing the way he’s playing he’s got enough time in him to break that record.”

Agbonlahor’s record is there to be broken by somebody in the future, and if Watkins keeps scoring at his current rate he will do just that.

Six goals in seven games is a ridiculous start to Watkins’ Premier League career, but we can’t help but feel that Agbonlahor is getting a little ahead of himself here.

How many players have we seen hit the ground running in the Premier League before eventually reverting back to their usual form?

Teemu Pukki was banging them in this time last year, but his form fell off a cliff, and the same could easily happen to Watkins.

Of course, every Villa fan will be hoping that this isn’t the case, but it has to be said that Agbonlahor is getting ahead of himself with this comment.
