According to The Chronicle, Eintracht Frankfurt defender Jetro Willems still wants to sign for Newcastle United.
It’s claimed that Willems remains close with Allan Saint-Maximin and a host of other Newcastle players having been on loan at St James’ Park last season.
The Dutchman suffered a season-ending injury in January 2020, and isn’t even expected to play again for Frankfurt until the start of 2021.
Willems will become a free agent at the end of the season, and it’s stated that he would still like to join Newcastle down the line.
Willems tweeted a photo on Friday showing that he was watching Newcastle in action against Southampton, showing how close the club still is to his heart.
Steve Bruce was a fan of Willems last season, but Newcastle have since signed Jamal Lewis as their new left back.
Willems heading back to Newcastle would surely depend on his fitness and whether Bruce feels that the Magpies actually need a new left back.
Still, on a free transfer, he could be fine depth – and he’s a name for Newcastle fans to keep an eye on in 2021.
