Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that Leeds United are already burnt out this season.

The Whites were thrashed 4-1 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

It was Leeds’ second-successive defeat by that scoreline after Leicester City routed them at Elland Road earlier in the week.

This was United’s eighth game since booking their Premier League return after a 16-year absence.

And Agbonlahor said that he believes Marcelo Bielsa’s side are already tired this season.

He told talkSPORT’s GameDay show, broadcast 07/11: “The biggest thing for me today was, the team looked tired. The team looked shattered. We talk about how they run in training, how much they run in games. This looks like a team that’s tiring and already suffering burnout.”

The former Aston Villa star is sort of a pantomime villain among fans of the West Yorkshire club at the moment and, honestly, this is an astonishing claim.

There is no way that Leeds are already ‘suffering burnout’ after only eight matches this season.

Yes, there might be a greater intensity to Premier League football in comparison to the Championship, but they came through 46 matches last term and were cruising to victories, thanks in no small part to the fact they were still much fitter than their opponents, even at the death.

Bielsa is well known for the fitness requirements that he demands from his Leeds troops, but only because they can handle it.

This is a very intelligent and experienced manager, backed by some very intelligent staff, and it’s just inconceivable that he would push the players so hard if he thought that they’d be ‘shattered’ one-fifth of the way through the campaign.

These days it’s difficult to tell when Agbonlahor is trying to goad the Leeds supporters or being serious but, on this occasion, it looks like he might be antagonising them.
