Former Arsenal star Lukas Podolski spoke to BILD about Mesut Ozil’s situation at the Emirates.
The two World Cup winners know each other very well having played together for the German national team as well as for Arsenal. Ozil has been left out of Mikel Arteta’s Premier League and Europa League squads, and it looks like he has played his last game for the club.
The situation at the Emirates has divided opinion among fans and pundits. Some feel that Arsenal need Ozil’s quality in the team, while others have backed Arteta’s decision to leave him out of his plans completely.
Podolski was asked about Arsenal and Arteta’s treatment of Ozil, and the German has taken the side of his former teammate.
He said: “I want to know the background, but I generally think with a player who is now in his sixth or seventh year with the club, to kick him completely out of the squad that’s not okay.”
“You don’t do something like that, and I don’t know if something happened in the background or not but even if he’s done something, you don’t do it. I don’t know, of course, if there is something going on in the background or not but even if there is something like that you don’t do it, mainly so you can keep his class on the pitch.”
Ozil has no future at Arsenal
Ozil has been one of Arsenal’s most important players since his arrival in 2013 up until the lockdown earlier this year. The German has always divided opinion, but on his day, he can unlock any defence in the league.
However, Arteta seems to have made up his mind. The Arsenal boss is getting results without Ozil, and as long as he manages to do that, his decision regarding the former Real Madrid man cannot be questioned.
The January transfer window will be the right time for Ozil to consider a move elsewhere. He is at the stage of his career where he needs to play regularly, but if he decides to see out his contract, Arsenal will have no choice but to continue paying his humongous wages.
