Watford striker Troy Deeney praised Arsenal defensive midfielder Mohamed Elneny on talkSPORT (7:37am, November 2, 2020).

Deeney was impressed by the performance of the Egypt international midfielder during Arsenal’s 1-0 win against Manchester United away from home at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

The English striker pointed out that the 28-year-old, who spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan at Besiktas, has had criticisms levelled at him in recent years.

Elneny has been at Arsenal since 2016, and the Egyptian has been criticised by fans and pundits alike, with Unai Emery making it clear in the summer of 2019 that he did not have a place for him in his team, as quoted in The Guardian in August 2019.

Deeney said on talkSPORT (7:37am, November 2, 2020): “Elneny was very good as well. He has come in for stick over the years. So fair play to him as well.”

Rejuvenated figure

Elneny has been very good for Arsenal since his return from his loan spell, and he seems to have repaid manager Mikel Arteta’s faith in him.

The Egyptian played well alongside Thomas Partey in midfield against United, and Arsenal fans will hope that he maintains this high level.

Against United, Elneny took one shot which was not on target, had a pass accuracy of 88.7%, won one header, took 72 touches, made three interceptions and one clearance, and put in one cross, according to WhoScored.
