It’s been a rotten couple of weeks for central defenders at Anfield.
First, Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for the rest of the season after the Jordan Pickford incident against Everton earlier this month, before Joel Matip then followed him into the treatment room and it’ll be a while before he’s fighting fit again.
Then, in midweek, Fabinho, a makeshift centre-back, picked up a hamstring injury in the Champions League win over Midtjylland, with The Mirror reporting that he’ll be absent for a couple of weeks.
Liverpool are down to the bare bones in tomorrow’s visit of West Ham United, with Joe Gomez, at 23, being their most experienced player for central defence.
But Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Billy Koumetio is fit again after a brief stint on the sidelines.
The 17-year-old hasn’t played a Premier League game for Liverpool but the German was full of praise for the French youngser following a series of very impressive pre-season displays.
Klopp said to BBC Sport today: “We have Billy the kid and Nat Phillips too, so these are our boys. Billy wasn’t available but now he is back. They all trained with us and now we have to make a decision.”
But will he start against the Hammers? Probably not.
Rhys Williams replaced Fabinho against the Danes on Tuesday and barring a surprise, the 19-year-old, who also hasn’t made a league appearance for the Merseysiders, will start alongside Gomez.
