The PlayStation 5 comes out next month and a lot of early previews have been praising Astro’s Playroom for being a brilliant introduction to the DualSense controller. Lots of people have been praising the haptic feedback, but – understandably – lots of people are also asking: will PS4 controllers work on PS5? Here you’ll discover how the DualShock 4 will be compatible – but limited – with the next-gen console.
Getting a next-gen console for Sony at launch has proven to be difficult for many thanks to the infamous pre-order chaos, but Sony still expects the console to exceed the current-gen’s launch sales of 7.6 million. And, for those who do get the console at launch, you can expect a myriad of great games included Bugsnax which will be free via PS Plus.
However, whether you’re getting the console immediately or are planning to buy it sometime next year when normality has hopefully returned, below you’ll discover whether PS4 controllers will work on the PS5.
Do PS4 controllers work on PS5?
Yes, PS4 controllers will work on the PS5.
However, while DualShock 4 controllers will work on PS5, you should know that they will only work for the selection of backwards compatible PS4 games.
The above was confirmed by a Sony FAQ through two answers which can be found below:
“The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.”
So there you have it. PS4 controllers will work on PS5 with supported backwards compatible games, meanwhile next-gen only games will simply support the PS5 controller to hopefully make use of its features such as haptic feedback.
