Liverpool are expected to make an enquiry about Kalidou Koulibaly in January but Napoli are desperate to keep their £90 million-rated talisman, according to AreaNapoli.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have a history when it comes to breaking the world-transfer record on a hugely talented central defender.

And after Virgil van Dijk was ruled out until the middle of 2021, the Premier League champions may be forced to repeat the trick in the January transfer window.

Koulibaly is perhaps Van Dijk’s closest challenger for the title of the ‘world’s best defender’ these days and, according to Calciomercato, Liverpool should come calling after the clock strikes midnight on January 1.

But, as Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli told Sky this week, Sadio Mane’s Senegal team-mate still has a three year contract at the Stadio San Paolo and he is still more than content with life in Southern Italy.

The man himself suggested as much in conversation with Napoli Magazine too.

So, for Liverpool, this may be a classic case of barking up the wrong tree.

AreaNapoli adds that it would have been much easier for the Reds to sign Koulibaly in the summer than it would be in the New Year.

Gennaro Gattuso is a huge fan of the 29-year-old and, with the Partenopei second in Serie A and dreaming of a return to the Champions League, keeping their most influential player for the whole of 2020/21 is an absolute must.

And that is without mentioning the fact that Aurelio de Laurentiis wants a staggering £90 million for a man who will turn 30 sooner rather than later (Corriere dello Sport).

Then again, there’s a reason why Koulibaly is valued so highly.

“Koulibaly is the best centre-back in the world,” former Napoli and current Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti told the Independent.
