Mason Holgate has taken to Instagram to post a seven-word message along with a short clip showing himself back in light training.

The former Barnsley defender, who the Toffees signed for £2 million in 2015, wrote: ‘Good to be back on the grass 💙 #EFC‘

Holgate hasn’t played for Everton this season having suffered a toe injury in the final game of pre-season against Preston, as The Liverpool Echo report.

In his and Seamus Coleman’s absence, Carlo Ancelotti has been forced to use £25 million signing Ben Godfrey at right-back in recent weeks.

The ex-Norwich man lined up in the unfamiliar role against Liverpool, and also against Southampton.

In that respect, Holgate’s post should please Ancelotti as the Italian will hopefully have a more natural right-back option to call upon in the next few weeks.

Admittedly, the 24-year-old – like Godfrey – is also a centre-back by trade.

However, Transfermarkt shows that Holgate has made 57 appearances at right-back throughout his career, so he’s more than capable of playing the role.

In comparison, Godfrey has played just six times at right-back throughout his career.

This defensive imbalance saw the Toffees lose 2-0 to Southampton last time out.

Coleman is also still missing with the hamstring injury he picked up against Liverpool, so Holgate’s return to light training will surely delight Ancelotti as a key option of his nears a return.
