According to The Sunday World, RB Leipzig are now expecting Liverpool to make a bid for star defender Dayot Upamecano in January.

It’s claimed that Leipzig believe Liverpool will make a move for Upamecano in the winter transfer window, with the Reds ready step up their pursuit.

Leipzig would allegedly find an offer of around £40million hard to turn down, and Upamecano appears to be emerging as Liverpool’s top defensive target following Virgil van Dijk’s injury.

Van Dijk went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury against Everton earlier this month, and now looks set to miss the rest of the season.

Given that Liverpool failed to replace Dejan Lovren over the summer and Joel Matip is injured too, the Reds may need to dip into the transfer market for a new centre back come January.

Upamecano would be a huge capture for Liverpool, having starred for Leipzig over the last three years, emerging as one of Europe’s top young centre backs.

The 22-year-old is a dominant force and strong in the air, but he also has ability on the ball that should appeal to Jurgen Klopp.

Upamecano has history at Red Bull Salzburg just like Naby Keita, Takumi Minamino and Sadio Mane, so he does make sense for Liverpool – but he did though sign a new deal over the summer, meaning Liverpool won’t have it easy.
