Reported Leeds United target Lovro Majer is thrilled to earn comparisons with Croatian hero Niko Kranjcar and plans to play for a major European club within three years, as he told Jutarnji.
If reports are to be believed, it won’t be long before a man many have labelled ‘the new Luka Modric’ is graduating with honours from the Dinamo Zagreb finishing school.
Majer has soared through the ranks at a club who have given us Mateo Kovacic and Andrej Kramaric, not to mention Real Madrid’s legendary number ten, while attracting admiring glances from clubs from England to Spain, via France and Germany.
The 22-year-old has been linked with Everton and Manchester City in the past.
But, according to Calciomercato, Leeds are now on the trail of an artistic attacking midfielder capable of paining the prettiest of pictures with a swish and a flick of his left foot.
Modric is not the only former Zagreb star that Majer has been compared to.
“I’m glad about that (to be likened to Kranjcar). Niko is a football legend and a former Dinamo player whom I followed as a boy,” Majer said of the former Portsmouth and Tottenham play-maker, before espousing the value of work-rate and a never-say-die attitude.
Two attributes Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa values above almost all others.
“Realistically, I was a good football player from the age of 12 to 16 but I was not the best. It was as if I was lagging behind my generation from Dinamo, which was really good at the time.
“Then I said to myself: I will not allow myself to fall behind, I have to train harder, I have to end up where I am today.”
The Croatian international plans to play at the top of the European game by 2023. Joining Leeds would represent the first step on his journey to stardom.
