Jamie Carragher has told the Telegraph that Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been poor for a year and a half now.
Pickford has come into sharp focus after the Merseyside derby, because his reckless challenge caused a serious injury to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.
Carragher has been one of Pickford’s highest profile defenders, as the pundit suggests that the Everton goalkeeper never meant to injure Liverpool’s star man.
However, the former Reds centre-back does think that Everton need to replace Pickford, as his performances have not been good enough for a long time now.
“If a manager goes into every press conference knowing he is going to be asked about the same individual for negative reasons he will be wondering if that plays is really worth the hassle,” Carragher said.
“Unfortunately for Pickford, at the moment he isn’t.
“We are not talking about a blip. Pickford has been poor for 18 months, which is why Ancelotti’s next major signing has to be a new number one.”
Everton have brought in Robin Olsen to try and provide Pickford with more competition in net, but the Swede is yet to make his debut.
Carlo Ancelotti has backed Pickford consistently so far, despite his error prone displays.
It is fair to say that there are concerns about Pickford’s form around Goodison Park, though.
Everton have made a brilliant start to the new season, but Pickford has still been guilty of being far too erratic in goal, and the Toffees may be on the hunt for a more steadying influence between the sticks in future transfer windows.
