Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has told Football London that he was pleased with the displays of Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith-Rowe and Joe Willock for his side’s under-23’s recently.

Arsenal gave Nelson, Smith-Rowe and Willock the chance to play for their development squad last weekend, and the trio all jumped at the opportunity to play some football.

The youngsters have struggled to break into Arteta’s first-team plans at Arsenal this term.

But Arteta insists that he was very pleased with the way that they played for Arsenal’s development side in a 3-3 draw against Manchester United.

“We believe that they were three players who needed some minutes, especially with the international break they didn’t have the chance to play for their countries, so it was almost a three or four week gap without a game and we want everyone to be in a good rhythm,” he said.

“They were very positive about it and they had a really good performance, which is good because we have everybody more prepared to compete when they have the opportunity.”

Arsenal also played William Saliba and Cedric Soares in the game against United, as they named a fairly strong line-up for the contest against United.
