Oreo’s 2020 pride commercial has some viewers split, especially Christian non-profit organisation ‘One Million Moms’, who want to boycott the ad.

The commercial was uploaded to the company’s YouTube on October 9th titled “Oreo Proud Parent”.

The video shows a young woman as she introduces her girlfriend first to her parents and then to her extended family.

Unsure of the dad’s opinion throughout, the viewer is shown his true feelings right at the end in an emotional declaration towards the young couple. See it for yourself here:

One Million Moms’ Oreo boycott

American christian non-profit One Million Moms, who advocate for “traditional values”, were less than happy with the ad. The group published a blog post against the Oreo commercial and called for a boycott of the company.

The post reads:

“Oreo and parent company, Mondelez International, have begun airing a gay pride commercial which has absolutely nothing to do with selling cookies. Mondelez International is attempting to normalize the LGBTQ lifestyle by using their commercials, such as the most recent Oreo ad featuring a lesbian couple, to brainwash children and adults alike by desensitizing audiences.”

The post then calls on readers to sign the One Million Moms petition to Oreos and Mondelex and “vote with their pocketbook”.

The petition has 17k signatures at the time of writing this.

Who are ‘One Million Moms’?

One Million Moms are a Christian non-profit and a division of the American Family Association. They describe that they, “give moms an impact with the decision-makers and let them know we are upset with the messages they are sending our children and the values (or lack of them) they are pushing.”

Although the name may have you fooled, anyone can join the group whether they’re a mom or not.

The Oreo commercial isn’t the first time that the group have started petitions over media representations of the LGBTQ community. In 2019 they held a petition against a cartoon female couple shown momentarily in Toy Story 4.
