Jamie Carragher has told CBS Sports Champions League (21/10/20 at 10:50 pm) that Adrian’s ‘not at the level’ of a Liverpool number one and his teammates know it.
Even though Jurgen Klopp’s side recorded a 1-0 win against Ajax last night, Carragher thinks Liverpool’s stand-in goalkeeper made a number of ‘rash decisions’ during the game.
Straight from kick-off, Adrian was making those on Merseyside nervous when he ran off his line and dealt with a loose ball in an unconvincing manner.
In the end, Adrian did well to secure a much-needed clean sheet to boost his shattered confidence, but Carragher is sure that the Spaniard is making those around him ‘nervous’.
“There is normally a big difference between a number one goalkeeper and a number two,” Carragher told CBS.
“It’s not normally like that in any other positions on the pitch, so he knows he is not at the level of number one. And everybody else in the team knows that.
“There is nothing worse than a goalkeeper coming in and making rash decisions, it makes everyone feel nervous.
“There were a couple of occasions early on, he clattered into Gomez. There was one late on when he comes to punch and he was fortunate that Ajax didn’t equalise.”

In truth, Adrian was brought in last summer as a number two, so expect ‘number two’ types of performances, which he is delivering.
Whilst there isn’t an exact problem with his shot-stopping, it’s his decision-making which is proving costly, his inability to look comfortable with the ball at his feet and his rashness when trying to punch the ball.
Either way, Liverpool will be hoping their usual man between the sticks – Alisson – is back sooner than later because his presence behind a now weakened defence is very much needed.
