Instagram has just added an exciting new feature to its app, giving users the ability to change the colour of their chats – but how do you do it?

Being one of the most popular social media apps out there, Instagram is always doing things to ensure it stays relevant and loved by its users. Some recent features they have introduced are reels, changing your app icon and even the ability to shop directly from the app.

However, sometimes it’s the simpler features that actually become the most popular, and that’s certainly the case this month as the latest Instagram update has made users able to change the colour of their chats, and everyone’s pretty excited about it.

Here’s exactly how to get the new feature for your Instagram DM’s.

Instagram introduces customisable chat colours

Facebook Messenger already did it years ago, and now Instagram has jumped on the bandwagon too as they’ve just introduced a new feature with their latest update that lets you change the colour of your chat.

This means that when you go to your Instagram DM’s you will no longer have to message people using the boring white and grey bubbles, and you can customise your theme to make it look far more appealing.

There are loads of options to choose, from solid colours to gradients and specific themes like Pride, love or tie-dye, and you can have a different colour scheme for every person you message. You’ll never get bored of changing your layout – but how do you do it?

How to change your Instagram chat colour

Instagram is currently rolling the new feature across the world, but it isn’t available to everyone yet.

When your app automatically updates and you click onto your Instagram DM’s for the first time, you should be greeted with an automatic message prompting you to change your theme.

After that, here is how you change your Instagram chat colour:

  • Open an Instagram message.
  • Click on the ‘i’ (info) button in the top right-hand corner.
  • Look through the chat settings and find the ‘themes’ button.
  • Click on this and choose the theme you want to use.

Instagram will notify when you change the chat colour

One important thing to note is that Instagram will send a notification to the other person every time you change the chat colour, so you might want to hold back on changing the theme too often!
