A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting arrived on Netflix on October 15th but just who and what is the film’s creepy villain, the Grand Guignol?
As October arrives once again, attention starts to turn towards the spookiest holiday of them all, Halloween.
The creepy time of year is always met with the release of new horror films and TV shows and 2020 is no different.
Netflix’s latest addition to their Halloween library this year is A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting which stars Tom Felton as the villainous Grand Guignol.
But just who and what is the Grand Guignol and what the Harry Potter actor Tom Felton done since the wizarding series ended?
A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting on Netflix
A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting arrives on Netflix on October 15th, 2020.
The film, which is based on the book series by Joe Ballarini, tells the story of Kelly Ferguson (Tamara Smart) whose easy night of babysitting turns into a life-or-death adventure after the child she’s been tasked with looking after, Jacob, is kidnapped by the boogeyman, the Grand Guignol (Tom Felton).
Kelly’s attempts rescue Jacob result in her to discovering a secret society of babysitters, all of whom double up as monster hunters.
Who is the Grand Guignol?
In A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting, the Grand Guignol is the film’s version of the boogeyman, emerging from Jacob’s closet to kick-start the film’s spooky goings-on.
The Grand Guignol, who is a creation for the film rather than a mythical monster, has its origins in French theatre of all places.
From the late 1890s up until the 1960s, the Grand Guignol theatre in Paris, now the International Visual Theatre, specialised in grim and grisly horror shows and became a pioneer in horror theatre.
The Grand Guignol theatre gets its name from the main character in a French puppet show and the name literally translates to “the big puppet show.”
As a result, it’s not hard to see why Tom Felton’s Grand Guignol often moves around a little like a puppet on strings and has an appetite for horror.
Tom Felton since Harry Potter
Starring as the Grand Guignol is the actor Tom Felton who fans will know best as the actor who played Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series.
Felton appeared in all eight Potter films but since the instalment in the franchise, The Deathly Hallows Part 2, has worked on a wide variety of films and TV shows.
Tom’s most prominent roles since Harry Potter came to an end have come in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Message from the King, A United Kingdom and the TV series, The Flash, where he played Julien Albert in 17 episodes.
A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting, featuring Tom Felton as the grotesque Grand Guignol is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on October 15th, 2020.
