A new trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has got fans talking, as a brand new shadowy figure is shown who bears a striking resemblance to Yuga, Vaati, and several Legend of Zelda villains.
As the figure is hooded, it’s not possible to identify the character’s true identity, but that hasn’t stopped people from speculating. Common guesses include the Fortune Teller and Aghanim, as the character does look similar to all of them.
So which mysterious character is being teased in the trailer, and is it someone that fans will recognise from a previous Legend of Zelda title?
Who are Yuga and Vaati in the Legend of Zelda series?
For either Yuga or Vaati to appear in Age of Calamity, Nintendo would have to draw on handheld Zelda games for inspiration.
Vaati has appeared in several Zelda games, most commonly those with a connection to the Four Swords gameplay pioneered by Capcom in the Game Boy Advance port of A Link to the Past. Nintendo has rarely referenced him in games that they’ve developed.
Yuga‘s most famous appearance is in A Link Between Worlds, a psuedo sequel to A Link to the Past. He comes the world of Lorule and has the power to turn people into paintings.
Are Yuga or Vaati in Age of Calamity?
It is not yet known whether Yuga or Vaati will appear in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. There’s every chance that the shadowy figure in the trailer is simply a new character with a similar design.
Both characters have pale skin and purple eyes, meaning that they do resemble the hooded figure. That said, both also come with a lot of additional lore attached, such as the Four Swords and dimension-hopping.
It’s possible that these concepts could be included in Age of Calamity, or alternatively, Yuga or Vaati could be given an entirely new backstory. That said, it could just as easily be a brand new character. At this stage, it’s hard to be certain.
