Chelsea don’t often send any form of compliment to Tottenham Hotspur, such is the rivalry between the two clubs.

The rivalry seems to have intensified in recent years, and it’s hard to imagine any transfer deals being done between the two sides any time soon.

Jose Mourinho’s move to Spurs will only intensify the rivalry, and many can’t wait for their first league meeting of the season in November.

Over the weekend though, one Chelsea player did offer some rather specific praise to Tottenham for how they’re thinking about their fans.

Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount told the club’s official website that he thinks the Blues have been one of the best clubs in terms of decorating their stadium in the absence of fans.

Mount did though add that he saw one Tottenham flag over seats at their home, which read ‘Can’t Smile Without You’.

Mount thought that was a unique and ‘good message’ to fans, making them feel important even if they can’t actually attend games right now due to the global pandemic.

“I think ours is up there as one of the best. I think it is really good what clubs have done with covering all the seats up with messages on there, that we’re missing the fans,” said Mount. “I saw Tottenham’s one was something like we can’t smile without you, as in the fans, which is obviously a good message – that it is not the same. So every club has done well with that, sending messages across,” he added.

The message of ‘Can’t Smile Without You’ is a little more important to Tottenham than a message to fans who can’t attend games, and goes back quite a while.

It’s actually a song by Barry Manilow, The Carpenters and more, which has become something of an unofficial club anthem at Tottenham, so the flag is a nod to that – but fans will absolutely know that Spurs echo the message to their loyal supporters right now.
