Origin Forme Giratina has come to Pokémon Go, appearing in five star raids, and ready to be captured by any trainers brave (and co-ordinated) enough to team up and take it on.

Most famous for its role as the mascot in Pokémon Platinum, Giratina is often thought of by fans as the Pokémon devil, as it serve as a counter to Arceus, the Pokémon god that created the universe.

Now, Origin Forme Giratina’s power can be harnessed within Pokémon Go – so long as you and your friends are able to form an effective raid party with the right counters.

How to catch Giratina in Pokémon Go

To catch Giratina, you’ll need to weaken it in a raid battle using Ice, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, or Fairy type moves.

Unfortunately, Origin Forme Giratina doesn’t have any major weakness. Its strong Dragon/Ghost typing means that some moves will be 2x super effective (ie twice as effective), but none will be 4x super effective, which is possible when a Pokémon’s two types share the same weakness.

Whatever you do, don’t use Normal, Fighting, or Ground type moves, as Giratina is particularly resilient to these. They’ll do some damage in Pokémon Go (unlike in the main series of games) but they’ll be very ineffective.

Best counters for Origin Forme Giratina raids

According to Pokémon Go Hub, the absolute best counters for Origin Forme Giratina that are available in Pokémon Go at present are:

  • Kyurem (both Black and White)
  • Galarian Zen Darmanitan
  • Mega Houndoom (recently added)
  • Dialga
  • Zekrom

That said, there is a problem with several of these Pokémon. Kyurem, Dialga, and Zekrom are all part-Dragon type, and as such, will be weak to Giratina’s Dragon-Type moves.

As always, the best Pokémon to counter Giratina is the one that you personally own, so if you don’t have these specific counters but you do have a strong Pokémon with the right type move, they’ll be the best choice for this battle.
