Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has suggested on the Hard Truth podcast that Tottenham Hotspur should have signed Ollie Watkins rather than Carlos Vinicius this summer.

Tottenham were linked with Watkins, but ultimately decided that his asking price was too expensive.

Watkins has since gone on to sign for Aston Villa for £28 million (BBC Sport), and he has started very well in the top tier.

Watkins netted a hat-trick in Villa’s recent demolition of Liverpool, and MacAnthony feels that the forward should have been Tottenham’s top striking target this summer.

“Ollie Watkins was made for the Premier League. His power, pace and ability. Every club in the Premier League should want to be buying Ollie Watkins,” MacAnthony said.

“You look at Spurs who were linked with him originally, and they got a striker from Portugal on loan and have to pay £50 million if he comes off.

“But if they had Watkins coming off the bench to play for Harry Kane late on, it’s not a risk.

“All Watkins has to do is score 10 or 12 goals in the Premier League and he’s worth £50 million. Where’s the risk?”

Whether Watkins will turn out to be more prolific than Vinicius still remains to be seen.

Vinicius is yet to make his Tottenham debut, but there are high hopes for the Benfica loanee.

Watkins will also be looking to keep up his excellent form at Villa, with Dean Smith’s side making an unbeaten start to the new campaign so far.
