Ally McCoist admits that he was ‘disappointed’ to see Lyndon Dykes join QPR instead of Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, while speaking on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (8 October, 9:40am).

Then again, it’s not as if the Gers didn’t try to bring this old-school battering ram of a number nine to Ibrox.

According to the Daily Record in June, the Glasgow giants made a second attempt to sign the Scotland international after showing an interest back in January.

But, with Livingston demanding a prohibitive £2 million fee, Rangers backed away and allowed their English-based namesakes to snap him up on a four-year contract instead.

Dykes’ rapid rise has continued south of the border, with his combative approach to centre-forward play encouraging Steve Clarke to entrust him with a key role ahead of Scotland’s European Championship play-off semi-final against Israel.

McCoist, arguably Rangers’ finest striker of all time, has been left wondering what might have been after his old employers missed out on securing Dykes’ signature.

“I was a little bit disappointed that Rangers didn’t go in for him when he was at Livingston,” said the ten-time Scottish Premiership champion.

“I thought we was one of those players with a lot of progression in him, a lot of improvement in him. He’s come in, scored for Scotland, and doesn’t look out of place at all.”

Rangers did get the targetman Gerrard wanted in the end, however, with Swiss international Cedric Itten arriving from St Gallen, ironically enough, for £1 million more than QPR paid for Dykes.

Itten has scored twice so far, with both goals coming in last week’s 5-1 thumping of Motherwell.
