Andros Townsend has told the ITV Football Podcast that Mesut Ozil is being perceived as a ‘horrible character’ in the press, but he has just proven otherwise.
The Crystal Palace winger was making reference to Ozil stating on Twitter that he wants to pay the full wage of Gunnersaurus after he was made redundant by the club after 27 years.
Even with the current climate, Arsenal have still managed to secure big deals in the transfer market but struggled to keep hold of individuals who earn far less money but have given so much service to the club.
Townsend touched upon that, and even though he doesn’t know Ozil personally, he spoke about how there is the wrong perception about him.
“You laugh but it’s actually crazy,” Townsend told the ITV Football Podcast. “The times we are in where people are losing their jobs. Then you are going out and signing Partey or Willian for these ridiculous wages. And the poor Mascot cannot even keep his job.
“So, fair play to Ozil. I don’t know Ozil personally. From what I read in the press, he’s a horrible character and stuff like this proves that he isn’t.”

It seems as though Ozil’s high wage and struggles to make Mikel Arteta’s matchday 18 has resulted in him being on the end of some heavy negative press.
Tottenham winger Gareth Bale was treated the same in Spain and he has since moved to try and get some enjoyment back into his career.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if Ozil is driven away just like his North London rival because, even with such a good gesture, there will still be negative press about him.
