Why did Eddie Van Halen and Valerie divorce? His ex-wife has written an emotional Instagram post in the wake of his passing.
It’s always a heated discussion when friends debate which rock band stands out as the all time greatest.
The likes of Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones always come up. However, it’s perhaps not a worthy discussion without celebrating the achievements of Van Halen.
Formed in 1972, the band inspired guitarists the world over and decades have been spent by many idolising the singular talents of the one and only Eddie Van Halen.
He was a pioneer of the genre and is generally regarded as one of the most skilled and innovative guitarists of all time.
Sadly, he passed away on Tuesday, October 6th 2020 at the age of 65.
BBC News reports that he had been receiving treatment for cancer, while also citing TMZ saying that he had been in and out of hospital in the past year.
Fans are looking back on his life and wondering about his previous marriage with Valerie Bertinelli…
Why did Eddie Van Halen and Valerie divorce?
- Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli divorced because she had cheated in the relationship and both were engaging in drug use.
As highlighted by Distractify, Valerie told TODAY that she cheated four years into the marriage.
She elaborated: “… it was a shame and it was a guilt that I carried with me for a very long time. And I don’t like that, so I really wanted to get that out of me.”
The 9/11 attacks also motivated her to pursue a different life according to the previous source: “I got tired of, once again, hiding and thinking this is not the life I want for myself, for Wolfie, especially, and I don’t want to keep treating Ed so badly.”
As for the drug use, Distractify also includes that she addressed this in her memoir – Losing It – and that both of them were in possession of cocaine on their wedding day: “As we filled out the forms at home, we each held a little vial of coke. It doesn’t really bode well for the marriage, I don’t think.”
The pair married in 1981 and their son – Wolfgang Van Halen – was born in 1991.
Eddie and Valerie divorced in 2007 and Eddie married Janie Liszewski in 2009.
