Ally McCoist has told Alan Brazil on TalkSport Breakfast (06/10/20 at 6:10 am) that he’s unsure as to whether Rangers should sign free-agent Jack Wilshere.

The 28-year-old mutually terminated his contract at West Ham on Deadline Day and he can now sign for any club he wants given that he is a free man.

The talk of Wilshere’s release has flittered through to Scotland and Rangers fans have backed the idea of him being snapped up [read here].

It was even discussed by TalkSport presenter Alan Brazil and Ibrox legend Ally McCoist, who admitted there’s talent in his legs, but he didn’t seem too convinced that he should be heading up to Glasgow.

“There’s talk about him and Rangers,” McCoist told TalkSport.”I just think his career has come to a standstill a little bit. I don’t know if you [Alan Brazil] agree or not.”

Alan Brazil responded: “I didn’t want to bring it up, but I got a text a couple of days ago saying that Jack has been fit for eight months. He’s just not getting a game, but he has been fit. It’s not an injury. It’s not a niggle. He’s alright and ready for selection.”

McCoist added: “I didn’t know. It’s such a shame because what a talent. I know [after being told he has 34 England caps]. He’s only 28 years of age.”

Brazil then asked: “Would you think there’s a possibility of Rangers?”

McCoist responded: “I don’t know. It’s clearly going to be depending on what kind of options he has available, Alan. The wee fella has got to get back playing and get his career back on track. Rangers have actually bought a South African midfielder. I don’t know much about, but a holding midfielder in the middle of the park. But Jack has got to get back playing.”

Steven Gerrard will know Wilshere’s game very well after seeing him establish himself as an England international.

But there’s no hiding the fact that he has just been released by a Premier League club who narrowly avoided relegation last season and his career has stagnated for a number of years now.

Given that Wilshere is a free agent, it might be seen as a no-risk situation given that there’s no fee involved, so it will be interesting to see if the Gers do make their move.
