Popular TikTok user Willy Wonka has been ‘cancelled’ by the internet, but many fans are defending him on Twitter.

Cancel culture is a big issue in the social media world as if you make one mistake, internet users are quick to publicly shame you, and it can sometimes be difficult to get rid of that negative reputation.

That’s exactly what’s happened to Willy Wonka TikTok, as he was ‘cancelled’ by social media users following a video he made about Spanish culture.

However, many fans have been quick to defend the TikTok user, arguing that he was wrongly ‘cancelled’ and didn’t actually do anything wrong.

Who is Willy Wonka TikTok?

Duke Depp, better known as @willywonkatiktok is a popular TikTok user who dresses up as and pretends to be Willy Wonka from the 2006 film Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.

The 19-year-old from Utah has gained a huge 14 million followers on TikTok, popular for his videos that imitate the film character. He’s even a verified user, meaning he has that famous blue tick next to his name.

Duke looks so similar to Johnny Depp’s character in the film that it’s actually a little scary, but when he’s not in costume he also posts on his personal TikTok profile @dukedepp which has over 3 million followers.

Why is Willy Wonka TikTok ‘cancelled’?

Willy Wonka TikTok is under fire after many people had a negative reaction to one of his TikTok videos, claiming that it is ‘stereotyping’ a certain group of people.

The video, which was posted to his account on October 1st, was a response to a question from a fan that asked: “Do you speak Spanish?” Willy Wonka then replied by saying “yo soy Willy Wonka, si?” before eating a tortilla chip.

Many people argued that the video was stereotyping Spanish, Latin and Hispanic cultures, especially through eating the tortilla chip, and subsequently Willy Wonka took the video down following backlash.

He also apologised for the incident on his social media channels. On Twitter he said:

“I am so so sorry about my “spanish speaking video” on Tiktok. Looking back on the video now I absolutely understand why the video was wrong. To anyone who I hurt with the video I apologize, and I promise to be better.”.

Fans defend Willy Wonka TikTok

Many fans have taken to Twitter to defend Duke Depp, arguing that the video wasn’t offensive in any way and claiming that he should never have been ‘cancelled’ for it.

One Twitter user said: “TikTok Willy Wonka getting cancelled for eating chips n salsa and saying hola soy Willy Wonka? Twitter mfs get offended by anything nowadays huh.”

“People making a big deal outta nothing. What he did wasn’t even harmful in any way,” said another.

Willy Wonka is one of the most popular TikTok users out there right now, and it’s safe to say he definitely won”t be losing any fans over this blunder.
