Southampton are interested in signing Heerenveen’s Joey Veerman and watched the midfielder in Eredivisie action at the weekend, according to Voetbal International.
As you might have heard, the transfer window closes on 5 October.
And Ralph Hasenhuttl will be praying when the clock strikes 5pm next Monday there’ll no longer be a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg-shaped hole at the heart of his midfield.
The Denmark international came to epitomise Hasenhuttl’s all-action approach and it’s no coincidence the Saints have looked sluggish and sloppy in the middle of the park since their skipper left for Tottenham.
But since his August farewell, Southampton have failed to bring in the likes of Dejan Ljubicic, Hamza Choudhury or Florentino Luis, while Weston McKennie found a life-changing move to Juventus impossible to turn down.
There is still time, however, and reports from Holland suggest Southampton are having a close look at Veerman as the 21-year-old emerges as a left-field solution to their midfield problems.

VI claims the South Coast club have made an approach for the energetic ball-player after watching him score the winner in a 1-0 triumph over VVV Venlo last weekend.
Veerman won’t come cheap, however, with the ink still drying on a contract that ties him to Heerenveen until 2024.
The Frisians are expected to demand more than the £11 million they sold skilful winger Chidera Ejuke to CSKA Moscow for (AD).
It’s fair to say Southampton have a mixed record when it comes to Eredivisie signings and will hope Veerman is more Graziano Pelle or Dusan Tadic than Jordy Clasie.
