The legendary bird Zapdos has come to Pokémon Go raids, and for those looking to catch the Electric Flying type, it’s important to use the right counters.

One of the Pokémon franchise’s original legendary Pokémon, Zapdos was once found exclusively in the Power Plant within Pokémon Red and Blue. Now, Zapdos can be found across various games, and is to appear in Five Star raids until October 1.

Taking down such a strong Pokémon won’t be easy. It’s important to have the right group of friends to attempt this raid, and to make sure everyone is using the best possible counter.

How to catch Zapdos in Pokémon Go

To catch Zapdos in raid battles in Pokémon Go, it’s important to use Ice and Rock type moves to counter the legendary bird’s strong Electric/Flying type combination.

While Moltres and Articuno both have a 4x weakness to Rock type moves, Zapdos only has a 2x weakness, as Flying type Pokémon are weak to Rock, but Electric types are not. Zapdos similarly has a 2x weakness to Ice, which may come in handy.

Your best bet to defeat Zapdos, though, is likely a Ground type Pokémon that knows Rock type moves. Ground Pokémon are resistant to Electric attacks, but be warned: because Zapdos can fly, Ground type moves are effectively useless.

Best counters for Zapdos raids

Finding a good counter for Zapdos won’t be easy, but according to Pokémon Go Hub and Pokébattler, some of the best include:

  • Tyranitar (Rock moves)
  • Rhyperior (Rock moves)
  • Golem (Rock moves)
  • Mamoswine (Ice moves)
  • Shadow Mewtwo (Ice moves)

These are the best possible counters in the game at present, due to their high maximum CP. Alternatively, Mega Evolving some Pokémon could be useful, but as most Mega Evolutions in the game at present have a weakness to Electric type moves, this might be a risky strategy.

Ultimately, the best counter for Zapdos is the Pokémon you actually have at hand. Hit it hard with Rock and Ice type moves, work together with your friends, and eventually, you’ll earn a chance to catch this legendary bird.
